“Flights are comfortable”, said no economy class traveller ever. When you want to travel the world, you want to make sure you save wherever you can. Your flight class is one thing you can save quite a bit on. I feel as though I speak on behalf of all fellow economy class travellers, that flights are pretty uncomfortable, especially when it’s a long one. Therefore, it’s very important to do anything possible to make the flight as comfortable as it can be.
These few items, as small as they may be, will make the world of difference in your comfort level on the flight. I don’t necessarily use all these items. Some are used by friends and family members of mine and they swear by them, same goes vice versa. So it’s important to keep in mind that not all the items listed will necessarily bring you comfort, but they sure will help you find out which ones do.
Headphones and/or Ear Plugs
As much as they are an entertainment piece, headphones play a big role in your comfort level. The last thing you want is to sit near an aggravated crying child and/or a loud group without any way of blocking them out. Ear plugs are another option if you are not the kind that can rest or sleep with music in your ears. As a good rule of thumb, it’s best to carry both just in case.
Pillow and Blanket
Depending on the airline and duration of flight you might be given a pillow and blanket, but you don’t want to bank on it. It’s typically quite cool in the cabin, which would make for a very uncomfortable flight if you’re not warm enough. Even a thin cotton blanket is better than none. You might also be quite grateful to have a pillow that provides good neck support and prevents your head from wandering around like a bobble head.
Sanitary Wipes and Face Wipes
During a long flight, or a short one for that matter, you will eventually walk down the aisle and grab on to handles and chairs, you might also get your hands messy when eating. Sanitary wipes will definitely help make you comfortable, knowing that you can clean your hands once in a while. You can also clean your food tray if need be.
After a few hours of flight, perhaps after a nap, a nice refreshing face wipe will sure rejuvenate you. You might be tempted to use the sanitary wipes for your face, but for good reasons, of course, refrain from doing so.
The title is pretty self-explanatory, but it’s usually an overseen matter. Many have the urge to dress to impress, but one thing is for sure, it will not be comfortable. You also want to avoid wearing synthetic clothing since it will make you overheat. I would highly recommend layering regardless of the season, given the difference of the cabin temperature and the outside temperature.
In my personal experience on long flights, my legs get quite sore. Compression socks are a very welcome addition to your flight. For optimal comfort, I would wear a regular pair of socks for the ride to or from the airport and wear the compression socks for the duration of your flight.
Gum or Hard Candy
Other than freshening your breath or changing the taste of your mouth, taking gum and/or hard candy during landing and take off will help relieve ear pressure build up.
Toothbrush and Toothpaste
The worst feeling at the end of your flight is a stale mouth. A travel size toothpaste and toothbrush is the solution to this problem. You might not need to brush on the plane, but if you have a connection flight, brushing your teeth during your layover can make the world of difference in your comfort level.
