Spanish Delicacies & Dishes you Can’t Miss on your Spain Trip

Aaaah Spain, the country of art, history, architecture, and fantastic cuisine. First I must say, if you’re reading this blog because you’re planning or already planned a Spain trip, I would like to say congratulation and that I’m excited for you. The beauty of Spain is unparalleled, but so is their cuisine. Which is why I’m here to help you understand the delicacies a little better and to help you avoid missing out on dishes that can’t be missed.

I’ll cover the colourful and vibrant, the savoury and rich, the sweet and succulent, as well as the beverages that are a must. So let’s go on this journey together and take a walk through the Spanish cuisine.

Tapas

Of course, a classic signature of Spain, Tapas cannot simply be ignored. Tapas is a lifestyle in Spain. You will see the young and old sitting on patios sipping their drinks for hours, with each one accompanied by a small bite to eat. The variety of Tapas in Spain can be overwhelming, especially if there’s no English menu in sight, but I can assure you they are all absolutely sublime. Olives, skewers of various pickled items, and bread topped with Iberian ham or chorizo are quite common.

Chocolate Churro

A little something sweet. The chocolate churro, or as the Spanish would say “Chocolate con Churro” (The rolling “R” is imperative!). These aren’t your average straight churros covered in cinnamon and sugar. A visit to a Chocolatería is a must not miss while in Spain. The dough is freshly fried and just a little bit crisp presented with a side of thick chocolate sauce. Often eaten as an afternoon snack, this is a sumptuous way to spend an afternoon. History lovers should also visit San Ginés, the oldest Chocolatería in Madrid, first opened in 1894.

Coffee

Spanish coffee; strong and aromatic. Perhaps the most important thing to note about Spanish coffee is that it is enjoyed and savoured. It is used as a way to socialize and connect with those around you, not taken to-go. The Spanish start with a shot of espresso and choose to add milk or take it cooled. Sugar isn’t added by your barista but served with a packet on the side. They say that the second most popular drink in Spain is the Café con Leche, which is simply coffee with milk.
